Video transcript – Extending the life of your deck
OK, we’re up at the top level here
Now the boys behind me you can see them setting out that deck, I’ll just lift that up, we pan around there, so you can see!
Ok, this is a really simple one, what you probably notice here behind me is this black thing here.
Now that is known as a Joist Strip.
So what you want to do is, you got to realise that your joists are the weakest part of any deck and you want to do everything you can to look after them.
Now this particular project, we’re just using pine. It’s more advisable to go with hardwood if you can. If your budget allows. But a lot of people building decks and things like that you know, this is one way to reduce that budget If need be.
Softwood is ok – if you protect it!
Your softwood is fine, just do everything you can to look after it. The best way to do that is with Joist strips
Now if you have a look at this joist strip, you see it’s a little bit of rubber there -that rubber sits on top of your joist like such, all the decking goes on top, and what happens is any water that goes in between your decking boards sits on that rubber and then has a chance to peel off the sides of your joists instead of sitting there.
The other good thing about it is when you put a deck screw through it, it’s rubber so it actually seals around the fixing, so it stops any water ingress, into your joist, and that’s what causes boards to pop and things like that.
What happens is water goes down through the screw hole starts a little crack and then sits in there, and then that crack just gets wider and wider until your fixing doesn’t hold anymore and your boards start popping up.
So by sealing around your fixing, you prevent or really slow that process down and your deck will last a lot longer than if you went without
It’s a small upgrade.
Anyone building a deck and not putting these on, you’re mad. Spend a few extra bucks, get these Joists strips on and you are adding 10-15 years to the life of your deck – Easy. Good on you guys!
